Is a 1x6 really necessary for the rails? Can I use a 1x4 instead? My daughter's mattress isn't very thick and I'd like for it to have some clearance over the rails. Is it safe with just 1x4s?
I would measure your mattress' height. You will have to account for the slats under the bed too. Your mattress would have to be pretty thin to be okay to use a 1x4(actually 3.5 inches). I built it and used the 1x6 and love it. It is very substantial and sturdy and I am confident it will last years longer than I will need it!
