Screws with Kreg Jig

Good morning.  Quick question...

When using pocketholes do you use the same length screws are you normally would?  For example, if a plan calls for 2" screws do you still sue 2" screws?  It doesn't seem so, but what length would you use instead?  Is there a general rule of thumb?

Thanks!

Because you are making a pocket hole, the screw starts out halfway through your first board.  So, no. Don't use 2" screws.  With 1 inch board and Kreg Jig, use 1 1/4" course.  If you are using MDF as your building material, use fine.

Have fun!  I'm jealous.  Sitting on the couch with nerve irritation in my neck.Cry I hope maybe later I can get back to my 2 rustic benches.

I just got my Kreg jig and built a tabletop/workbench top with it.  This thing is SLICK!!  I also was introduced to the concept of "self tapping screws".  I feel so cheated on my other projects knowing that these have been there this whole time!

Seriously, this thing takes it to the next level.  I love it and thanks for the ideas, recommendations, and tutorials, Ana, et al.

Awesome!  I have mine mounted with a board "staged".  I can't do anything yet, since I have to clear coat the house and barn bookcases yet.  Once I'm done there I hope to give it a try too!

Have fun!

i have a strange question that i haven't been able to find an answer to...

do you do anything special to finish off the pocket holes? fill them with wood putty? or just leave them open?

i am considering making this: http://www.facebook.com/photo......1384940535

and i'm not sure if the holes will be seen when it's all finished up.

i'm a newbie! please help!

Hey!

Kreg makes wood plugs that fit right into the holes, maybe a little will stick out which you can use a flat hand saw to trim off.  These glue in.  Otherwise it its perfectly fine to wood fil them and sand then finish.

Don't go crazy and fill every one- you may want to just fill those in the viewable areas so to speak.  You can leave open those underneath.  When I did the cubbie bookcase, I did not fill those on the very bottom by the wheels, but did fill the ones on the underside of each shelf.  y daughter was using it in her "reading area" and I knew she'd be sitting on the floor, so I filled those too so it looked finished.

I'm designing an entertainment center based off Ana's knock-off of the Logan Large TV stand...  And I'm trying to figure out which holes I'll need to fill with the inserts to give it a nice clean look.  I'll have to be rather strategic with my hole placement, for sure.

Thanks for the info on the kreg jig. I actually saw the jig at Lowe's today! I thought I was going to have to order it online and then wait for it.

I would love to see the plans you come up with for the entertainment center.  That's actually what I'm going to try and build.  I cannot decide between the logan style, printer style or the cubbie style.

I'm taking Ana's Logan design and using it as a template for a couple of purposes:  Getting it exactly the way I want it, and also helping me get acquainted with Sketchup!  When it's all done I'll post a link to the Sketchup file with some step-by-step instructions when I get to that point.
