Your Advice: Anyone have the Dewalt Cordless 18 gauge nailer?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sun, 09/12/2010 - 09:38

Yesterday I was in Blue lovingly holding the Dewalt Cordless 18 gauge nailer.  No air compressor.  Staple up trim without a cord in the house . . . oh, the possibilities!  But it seemed very heavy and expensive (about $300).  Does anyone have this nailer?  And if you do, how fast does it fire nails?  And does it get heavy?  Thanks so much for your input.  Ana

I own this nailer and really like it.  It will not replace your air guns mostly due to the size.  The gun fires great and you can adjust the countersink.  I use this mostly for trim, working on a ladder/scaffolding and quick jobs.  Most handymen like this for working on client sites where you don't want to irritate a client with a compressor.  I do agree $300 is expensive.  I buy 80% of my tools from eBay and have never had a problem.  If you can find it on craigslist, even better.  If you want it new, buy the bare tool from Amazon and save on the cost of a battery (which is also very overpriced).   Check out Paslode impulse nailers for a nice alternative.   James

This is a great topic.  I am in the market right now for a nail gun (thanks a lot Ana!).  I wander around HD, L, and Menards looking (and drooling) all the time.  Does anyone have a reccommendation?  If I want to do mostly framing of woodworking etc?  The lower the gauge the bigger the nails?  Is it possible to get a compressor and a nailer for around $150?

Thanks for any help ya'll can give me!

I have been drooling over this exact nailer for so long!!!  Definitely on my wish-list!  :)  :)  :)  Let us know if you end up getting it!

We have one.  It works really well, except it jams up occasionally when I'm using shorter nails.  The heaviness doesn't really bother me, but it's the only nail gun I've ever used.  I hate dealing with cords and we don't have a lot of storage space for a compressor so when we were in the market for a nail gun I didn't even bother to look at any of the other choices.  We've put in lots of moldings with it.

 Ana,

I actually scored this cordless nail gun from a guy on Craigslist about 6 months ago.  (Not totally sure if it's exactly the same one you're speaking of, but it works perfectly with my 18v Dewalt set of tools.)  I practically stole the set from the guy, and I was pretty sure I won the lottery the day I bought it.  Came with another charger, 2 batteries, a sawzall, a drill, and the nail gun.  For $200!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I made out like a bandit.  Gotta love Craigslist.  It's actually quite rediculous the number of Dewalt tools I have hanging on the peg board in the garage.

Anywho, this nail gun totally rocks.  It rarely jams, and when it does the front piece flips up so you can get the nails out easily.  It nails fast enough for me, and I love how you can adjust the depth it shoots.  It is a little on the heavy side because of the battery, but oh well, you get to work on your arm muscles at the same time.  :)  DEFINATELY worth it to me, because I didn't want to always lug out an air compressor.

I only wish I had this nail gun years ago, I can't imagine the time it could have saved me putting up trim around the floor, building stuff, etc.

One of the things I'm not sure about is the maintenance on the nail gun.  At some point is it going to need serviced?

Keep up the good work Ana!!

PS: Are you bringing back the Coffee button?  I'm going to owe you a few Coffees soon.  :)
