getting frustrated

so, i'm bummed.

i haven't had any time to build, and i'm starting to get tetchy about it! LOL

our business is going very well. it's a holistic health business, and some people are leaving (yay!) and new people are coming in (hazzah!). we are ordering signs, the web site will be up in a month (i'll share it with ya), and we are in the process of redecorating.

i was considering building for the reception area, but then found some great, inexpensive mid-mod furnishings. seriously, my whole reception was done for $250, and i sold the reception sofas for $300, so that's pretty awesome. it's part-way to a kreg jig. :D

so, here is our remaining list for the business:

1. paint--all of the rooms need to be painted, so that's 6 practice rooms and the yoga room. actually, only two walls of the yoga room need to be painted. with this, the "trim" at the bottom of the rooms are industrial metal 'floor boards.' they're in both brown and black, throughout the place and in some rooms, both colors. i'm thinking of spray painting them bright white, since our walls are a warm-gray off white. or, possibly doing them in silver/chrome or some such. anyway, they need some help. also, the doors need to be painted, and i discovered that there's a thing out there called "white board paint" that we can get. cool.

2. massage chairs--these need some TLC. some need new velcro, some need some engineering work, and all need new bags. bags for them are expensive--$129 a piece--and if i could sew, i would do it. Also, we are making re-useable massage chair face cradle covers, because i'm tired of throwing away $100 every 6 weeks on disposables. i would also do these if i could sew, but i can't, so, oh well.

3. here comes the interesting part-- building furniture!

a. Massage Chair Lockers: i've adapted (with the help of my workshop friend michael) the locker plans here to suit our needs at the office. I have 5 massage chairs. I'm making 6 lockers (two banks of three) because the 6th locker can hold our cleaning supplies for the office. that would be the vacuum cleaner, the dusting cloths, and the all purpose cleaner (tea tree oil, peppermint essential oil, and water). above the lockers for the chairs, in the open shelf, we'll have a basket for the clean face-cradle covers, and a basket for ones that need to be cleaned. it will also house the "on site notebook" which has the paperwork for the chairs.

b. desks for each massage room: i need 6 of them, and they're all going to be small. my group of people agreed that the desk in ana's closet (the little white one that closes up) is the right size, depth-wise, but that the amount of storage was unnecessary. the console tables are the right size as well--insofar as depth goes. i'm thinking of shelves on one side and legs on the other. Michael is helping me design some plans, too. so, i'm sort of hacking away at ana's stuff. LOL

c. shelves for each room: i'm not sure what form these are going to take yet. I'd actually like to do the armoire--i like things to be closed away. i think it looks far less cluttered that way. so, i'm looking seriously at that. that would be 6 armoires, though i'm thinking about the apothecary cabinet as well. Just trying to figure out what will work best. i hope i don't get "analysis paralysis"--because I am starting to feel gun shy about these decisions.

d. the yoga room--this is just nuts. i need cubbies for people's stuff, i need some kind of cabinet for the yoga props. i really have analysis paralysis here. it's gotten out of hand. i was going to go with crates, but they're just not deep enough for what i need. which means i could make deeper crates, or use the cube plans to make cubbies. which is what i'll do. i think. LOL

And then there's what i want to build at home.

but the reason that i'm frustrated is that i want to build NOW but there's such a process to it all.

i need to build a wall in the office before we paint, then paint before we build. and once we build, i have to get rid of--systematically--the furnishings we have. do i do one room at a time--eg, the desk and shelving--and then move it into that room, or do i just do all of the desks and shelves, then move out the old stuff, and then move in the new stuff all at once?

and then there's the whole bit about my kid. i love him, seriously, but the workshop is not a good space for him. it's a communal space--lots of people's art and stuff around. lots of people around. doors that open out into a busy city street. it's just not a good place for me to work and him to just be along side. so, we need child care. also need it to build the wall and paint too. so child care for that.

so, i'm starting to feel frustrated. i want to get moving on every project. this weekend has been spent writing ALL of the ad copy for the web site because my husband 1. didn't tell me when it was all due (tomorrow); and 2. procrastinated anyway. i found out on Wednesday that ALL of the ad copy is due tomorrow, and we've been pretty much spending every spare moment on it since then. so, no painting or building this weekend.

Anyway, i know it will all come around right, but i just can't find the time.

i know no one has responded, and it is perhaps unread, but we do have forward progress--FINALLY!

1. FIL is purchasing a kreg jig for me for christmas! :D i'll get it end of Nov!

2. we are in the process of painting our business! :D this weekend, we are doing the entry and reception; next weekend, we are building a wall and painting the little staff area! after that, we'll paint a room each day for 7 days. they are small rooms, and our friends are going to help! :D

3. the next step, then, is to *get building*. we should have the place painted in the first week of November, and i should have the jig in the second. my husband is going to watch the kid, and i'm arranging times with my tutor to build!

4. final step is to work on the soft things of the studio--linens, fiber arts, and so on. ;) i'm going to make a lot of wool fiber art in November, mail some to the US as christmas gifts, and others go into the studio!

Zoe (also my 12 year olds name.  I named her after the song by Lenny Kravitz)-

I hear ya sister.  It always frustrates me too.  Especially if you dont have money to throw around.

It seems like every project has a pre-project and before that ANOTHER project.  We have lived

in our little starter house for 10 years (has it been that long already? yikes).  It was supposed to be

our starter house but about 3 years ago we had about 10 people just walk away from their mortgages

and just screwed everyone in the neighborhood.  Our house went from a fair market value

of $200,000 to just $80,000.  Our mortgage is well over what it's worth not.  SO we are stuck,

stuck, stuck.  I hesitate to bemoan my fate, given there are lots of people that don't even have

a home.

OK I digress.

With me, our home is a bit older.  It was a rental prior to our buying it so there was a lot of work

to be done and a lot of corners that were cut by the prior landowners.  I could tell you some

stories!  After tearing out our bathroom tub surround we found the wall was full of old shirts and

blankets (they used it for insulation!).  Some really crazy things!   We have two dogs and I really

want to fence the backyard (it runs parallel to our alley).  I can't fence the yard until I remove a

crappy old retaining wall.  I cant remove the old retaining wall myself because its made of 6x6

planks held together with rebar that was driven into the ground very very far.  I can't hire

someone for that until I get an arborist to come and remove the tree that blocks the way.

blah..blah...blah.  Don't even get me started on the kitchen.

I found something that helps though.  If you're a list maker (I am a compulsive one).

I write out ALL things that need doing.  I then indent and break down each task into

smaller ones.  The most important thing for me is to FOCUS.  Stay on one room, or

one area.  If I don't, nothings getting done.  I also feel like I am spinning my wheels

if I don't stick to one task because little things are taken care of but I don't feel i've

done a single thing if I don't finish something and have that little closure.

I hope things get better for you (they will) and just remember to

take a deep breath and don't be hard on yourself!
