Think the 1 x 12 measurements are wrong in Balin plan

Submitted by shouts on Tue, 10/26/2010 - 10:01

The plans call for a 1 x 12 that is 11 1/2 inches wide, but the standard is (I checked) 11 1/4.

Unfortunately, I'm at the point of building the drawers in the plan and I'm faced with creating drawers with faces 11 1/2 by 11 3/4.

How am I going to create a clean face now?

Is this an error in other plans?

Well, from comments on other plans, it seems the 1x12s by Ana are 11.5 inches, but for the rest of the US it seems we're all at 11 1/4.  If it were me, and I hadn't caught it before starting, I'd be tempted to get plywood or MDF and cut that to 11.5.

I was thinking that, too, but then I have to find some veneer to clean up the edges?

If you're staining, yeah...Or if it's just the edge around the front of the drawer that will be ugly, and you can live with it, it won't be seen when it's closed, right?

Or, you could figure out how to glue & screw a bunch of pieces together to make the right size?  it would definitely add some visual interest?

Yes, I'm trying to figure out the pieces I could get to 11 1/2 with... so far I'm thinking 2 1x5's and a 1 x 3.  But I'm wondering if my lumberyard has a 1x5!  They'll probably say "oh, we can rip down a 1 x 10" - but then that wouldn't be a 1 x 5! I might be better off going and telling them my problem, and let them figure out the solution.

This is good to know.  I've worked with 1 x 12s on other projects but not where the 1/4 inch difference mattered and I was about to buy the lumber for this project tomorrow.    Shouts--did you decide what to do?

If I was just starting this (which I will be soon!  2 projects ahead of it...) I would just take into account the smaller size and changes plans appropriately.  or do the plywood fronts and the veneer edging ;)  I have at least a month to decide!
