I have a nice set of dishes but no hutch or cabinet to display them in. I was thinking these ledges might be perfect if I made them with the back being a 1x4, but the bottom and the front piece being 1x2s. I was just wondering if that sounded feasible and sturdy enough?

In Ana's post about the $10 ledges, a reader asked if they could modify the plan and use a 1X3 for the bottom instead of 1X4. Here was Ana's response:
"Hi Kelli, it would “work” but the problem with going narrow is your books might fall forward (or picture frames). I did a demo with a 1×3 as the bottom, and it was too narrow for taller items. It would definitely work for shorter items. The 1×4 was much better though for layering photos frames and holding other collectibles."
If you have nice china, I would be afraid that they would tip over if you used 1X2 at the bottom.

Thank you! I forgot to even look at the comments at the bottom.
