Open Base File Unit - Drawer size question

Submitted by eoren1 on Sun, 02/20/2011 - 15:41

I tried to post this question as a comment under the plans but it has been 'awaiting moderation' for a while and thought I would ask the community for some help.

I was planning on starting the corner Bedford desk with two file cabinet drawers next weekend.  However, I noticed that, on the Open File Base Unit plans, the height of the top and bottom drawers seem to differ:

The plans for the drawer (using 1×12) would work for the bottom; but not the top (it measures 13 1/4 on the plans).  Has anyone who built this noticed the discrepancy and adjusted the base higher?
Also, I was at PB yesterday and saw this desk with the two file cabinet drawers on one side and three drawers on the other. Any chance of adding plans to mod the CPU base so that it has two narrow and one deeper drawer?  Can anyone lend me their measurements for these three drawers and the dividers for the open base unit?

Thanks!

Figured it out.  Kept missing that 1x2 trim piece that makes the top shelf the correct size...

Still would appreciate plans on making a 3 drawer instead of the CPU base.

I'm hoping to build this desk eventually with one of my bases being a 3 drawer cabinet. Instead of using 3/4" MDF or plywood like Ana suggests, we make our drawers out of 1/2" plywood and you can use 1/2" for the bottom also or router a groove for a 1/4" ply bottom.

I would leave the spacing for the bottom drawer the way it is. Measure up 5 1/2" from the middle shelf and add another shelf. (If you are using side mount drawer slides there is no need to have a full piece of wood for the middle shelves. I would just rip a piece of plywood or MDF to 1 1/2 or 2 1/2" w and kreg it in there.) That will give you two 5 1/2" spaces and each drawer front would be 5 1/4" h x 17 3/4" w. Hope that helps. Pottery Barn actually gives a lot of dimensions right on their website.

Thanks for the reply

I did the math after posting and realized the same thing!  Can get the one deep drawer and two slightly smaller (5 1/4 vs the 5 1/2 plans given).

Only question left is the drawer depth.  I saw the that drawer sides are made with 1x4 or 1x10 at 14 1/4".  This will go into the cabinet with a depth of 15 1/2".  Adding a 3/4" face to it leaves me with the drawer lying 1/2" too deep and not flush with the cabinet.  Am I missing a 1/2" for the drawer slides on the back or something??
