There are some really fancy library bookcases that contain a ladder, and from top to bottom are like this: rows of shelves, a pull-out tray for a desk for reading, and then cabinets beneath. The best example I can find is on Victorian Trading Company, though it's a bit too fancy for us do-it-yourselfers!

It seems like something that could be made in sections, but minus the ladder (for safety reasons). I don't think I'd have the energy to build it, but for any of us bookworms (we still exist!) it's a dream to actually own one! ;)

I would love to see this too - maybe even with a built-in desk option in the middle (or faux fireplace?). We've been wanting to do something like this in our living room for a while!
