I would love to see a plan for this pallet shelf. I can't seem to find it online. I think the original creator now has a book with the plans, but I don't want the entire book.
Couldn't you take a piece of plywood (or whatever) and attach your ledges, deeper than usual; then, place the "pallet" strips on the flat surface between the ledges? If you look at the picture, you can see there's a solid surface (not the wall) behind the "pallet". I don't build things, so you would have to figure out the lower back piece that creates the easel-like base.

It was more work to do the sketchup and directions...
than to build it I'm sure.
