General Instructions

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

Instructions

Step 1

Getting the stringers cut right is super important. Mark out as shown above. Use a protractor to draw angled lines. Remember that all lines are 15 degrees off square, in one direction or another. Cut two, and ensure that both stringers match up.

The front edge of the stringer should be marked as front and is shown on the upper left of the diagram above.

Step 2

Attach front apron to stringers as shown above. Use screws and glue.

Step 3

Begin by laying the 1x3 seat slat as shown above. Keep flush to the back of the cut stringer. Follow with 1x2 slats, leaving 1/4" gaps.

Step 4

Front legs. Mark front legs for seat heights on insides. Attach legs to stringers and front apron with screws and glue. Screws into stringers must be 1 1/4", screws into front apron should be 3".

TIP: To hide screws, fasten from the inside, underside of the chair.

Step 5

Step 6

Now we are starting to look like a chair! Use 2" screws and glue to attach stringers to seat back.

Step 7

Consider step 9 and leave 3/4" to the front of the arm supports. Attach with 1 1/4" screws to front legs and 2" screws to back support as shown above.

Step 8

Arms need to tie in both the supports and the back support. Screw or nail down with glue and 2" fasteners.

Cut out if desired as shown above.

Step 9

Complete the chair styling by adding decorative supports as shown above. Glue and nail in place.

Finishing Instructions
Preparation Instructions
Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth.

It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.

Ana - about to build a couple of these for the Grands, but I question the angles shown for the stringers. You show angles of 85 deg's, 90 deg's, and 15 deg's. The result would be 190 deg's. All angles should add up to 180 deg's on a squared end, correct ? Also, "Step 2" shows the frt apron dim as 14 3/4, but your cut list has the dim at 15 inches. ??? Any help ?
