Finish Used:
Valspar spray in Baby Blue (satin)
Minwax stain in Dark Walnut
Minwax Polyurethane spray clear semi-gloss.
I started by distressing my wood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=werjbXUQf28&feature=player_embedded#at=13), I then painted with Baby Blue (2 light coats), sanded the edges to give it a warn/weathered look, applied stain and wiped down soon after application being sure to soak any crevice before wiping down (this takes a little practice to get the exact look you want). Finally after it dried I sprayed with the Polyurethane spray. I think this is by far my FAVORITE finish!

Really spectacular! You are one very skilled lady! :)
Beautiful!
I am in LOVE with your finish. I totally have all of the scraps I need already set aside in the garage to make this, but I think this just got bumped to the top of my list. I am most definitely going to Lowes tonight to buy me some of that baby blue paint! Amazing!

Empowerment
I was heartened to read your statement that you found the experience empowering. The ability to make something is one of the greatest thrills I know.
Don't get discouraged about hand saws. That stand would actually be really easy to build using the right hand saws. I use hand tools almost exclusively, and I find it to be quite fast. I also don't worry about losing fingers.
You'll need to buy a decent saw (or saws, they're addictive), but I've bought good saws on ebay for $25. And watch this video: http://www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop/video/3000/3009.html A couple of hand tool experts/goofballs show you how to make very fast and accurate cuts with hand saws.
You can also buy a Japanese pull saw at Blue, Orange or Harbor Freight. They're inexpensive, but they're great tools. They work almost identically to the saws in that video, except they cut when you pull instead of push.
beautiful
Excellent job! your very inspiring:) starting my first project this weekend...
Thank you all for your kind
Thank you all for your kind words! I am so excited because I can say that I no longer need to build an entire piece with a hand saw! My hubby surprised me with a chop saw for Mother's Day....woohoo!!

How exactly did you apply the stain? Any tips or tricks? I've sat drooling over this finish and tried over and over to figure out how to apply it like this but haven't had any success replicating. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I LOVE it!
