Painting an assembled piece.

I just built the Simple Outdoor Chair (http://ana-white.com/2011/06/simple-white-outdoor-chair). And the instructions have the assembly completed and as the final step, finishing (sanding, painting, etc). The problem I'm having: The tiny crack where the back is attached at the bottom (and the butt boards also meet) is impossible to paint. I was trying to prime it to put some gloss latex and then some polycrylic on that, but still haven't been able to prime it. In hindsite, I wish I had primer, painted, and poly'ed the back before attaching it. But here are my questions:

1) Any tips on painting the nearly-impossible to reach?
2) If next time I do paint the back separately, how do I finish the patched areas from countersinking/screwing on the back?

Thanks!

I have built one project so far. My plan for the future is to at least prime all lumber before assembly. I may even prime and do one coat of paint first. I think the final product will look much nicer. Another option could be to get a paint sprayer?? I am not sure if that would work though.
