The New Boss

Momplex Stats

Money Spent So Far:
$5000 + Cost of Land
Time Spent So Far:
240 Hours on Site + Planning

The hill has a big hole in it.

On Saturday morning, the big boss showed up at the top of the hill.

And for the next two days, it pulsed a tiny red laser light around and around, watching what we were doing.

The laser level has a buddy, called a detector, that you attach to a big measuring stick.  He's kind of the inside guy, with the inside scoop.  When the detector is level with the flashing red light, it beeps, and you know how deep to dig.

But before we get to digging, we have to lay out the foundation of the Momplex.  That's the Ram and his cousin Jared.

The Momplex needs to be below grade on the front and sides by four feet, with a drive under garage on the back side.  It's a 44 foot by 44 foot perfect square, and we've got some requests that it needs to face the mountain view.

We spent the next few hours positioning the house.

And this poor little weed happened to be growing exactly where the back corner of the Momplex will sit.

And then from the first corner, we found the remaining three corners.  And it was connect the dots time, spraying a big orange square from dot to dot on top of the hill.

Then the Ram started digging with Snort.

And digging

And digging

And dumping of course

Into great big piles of dirt perfect for creating really dirty laundry in.

Can you blame her?

Because Dad get's to play on the dirt hill too.

Under the boss's watchful eye of course.

Even when you owner build, you still gotta boss, silently watching, ready to beep loudly if you are off just a tiny bit.

But somebody has to do the dirty work.

I do believe we are ready for footers!

Well, almost.

To be continued.

Hooray!

So exciting to see you officially "break ground" where the frame of the house will go up! I'm so enthralled by this whole process, and can't wait to read about every step of your building journey!

Boss

So. I must know.. Can boss record elevation data?
My husband built our house last year and we are not in the phase of figuring out landscaping. But our lot has a pretty reasonable grade and we want to plot elevation data and use a computer to figure out what the heck we are doing...
This boss may just be what we need.

Snort

I love the name. My daughter loves 'Are You My Mother?' Even more appropriate for the Momplex. Can't wait for further updates.

Don't blame her at all.

Don't blame her at all. Playing in the dirt is such fun.

Garages in the back, at a lower grade. A half stair from the front to the living level. Does the drive snake from the front of the house around to the back? So if they want in summer, they can park in front and climb a half stair?

I guess I'm spoiled, because

I guess I'm spoiled, because I see those little laser guides all the time as a concrete inspector.

The one that amazed me recently was a really really expensive one that had a precise gps with the plans located in it, so you could walk around the jobsite, not even having to measure anything, and it would tell you where every single column line and row would be. It was dumbfounding.

They even make huge power-screeders for warehouse floors with lasers built in so it comes out ridiculously level.

@Tina Ernstrom

A laser level is just a new version of a dumpy level, it can be use to determine the difference in elevation between 2 points, therefore you can use it to plot elevation.

Looks like fun

Congrats on the groundbreaking! It's my first time stopping by, and this takes me back to when we broke ground on our house last year... its so exciting to get out of the planning phase and into the "doing" stage.
