Seeking suggestions for Subway Sign Art

What seems to be of recent popularity is subway sign art. I've found some at Restoration Hardware that I especially like. There are two issues with those however - 1.) They are way outta my price range and 2.) They are subway signs referencing the New York Subway system. I however would like to make ones referencing the Boston T-Line Subway system. I have attached a link so you can see what I am talking about. It's hard to tell from the picture exactly how it is made, so I will try and describe it the best I can.

The frame is a shadow box and the actual sign itself floats within the box or atleast that's the illusion. The sign itself appears to be made from a black matte and the letters are cut out of the matte with some type of white sheet material behind the matte so the letters show through.

I'm pretty sure I can figure out the shadow box part and I have already purchased the white material to go within the box and behind the matte. I have even created a layout of the sign with the streets I want using Photoshop. The issue that I am having is that I have no idea how to or where to turn to so I can have matte board cut with the words I want in it. I have tried several framing stores in my area and they all say that's it all but impossible or that it's just way too expensive to do and won't even quote me a price. I think that they just either don't want to be bothered with it or have no idea how to do it. I did find one place that could do it, but they weren't able to do it on the size of matte board I wanted which is just a common size you would find at Michaels or any other craft store. Anyway, is there anyone that might be able to tell me somewhere on line or locally in southern MI where I might be able to get this done. It can't be that impossible - can it? Although my username is Boston-Fan I happen to live in MI - atleast until my wife and I can manage to move out to the New England Way. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it seems I am at a stalemate with this project.
