Super Easy Console Table

PDF versionI needed a simple console table by the stairs and my son and I made this one pretty quickly. I literally spent more time today trying to draw the plan on sketchup than I did building the table. If I ever figure out sketchup, I will add the plans! I also didn't have my camera with me while making it, but the table is pretty self-explanatory

4 2"x2" cut at 74" (long sides of top & bottom frames)
6 2"x2" cut at 12" (sides, braces of top & bottom frames)
4 2"x2" cut at 28" (legs)
General Instructions
Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!
Step 1
First, make the table top.
1.Glue 8 of the 1x2s together on the edges, then screw cleats to the back, using 8 screws on each cleat. I placed the cleats about 6" in from each edge. (Note: the cleats do not extend the entire width of the tabletop so that they will it into the top of the base when attaching the top.)
2. Glue remaining 1x2s on the outside of the 8 boards, then glue and attach breadboard ends to ends of tabletop, using Kreg pocket hole screws. Be sure to attach one screw into each edge board and two more in the middle. This will keep the edge boards attached and part of the tabletop.
Step 2
Build the table base:
1. Use glue and kreg jig to attach the 12" pieces inside the longer pieces to form the rectangle base. Repeat for the tabletop base, adding 2 extra 12" cross pieces in the middle for added stability. (When attaching cross pieces, note placement of cleats on bottom of table top)
3. attach 4 legs at 4 corners, using two 2 1/2" screws through the rectangular base into the leg.
Step 3
Sand and finish the base and top separately. Attach top to base with 2 1/2" screws.
Finishing Instructions
Preparation Instructions:
Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth.
It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.
Finish Used:
For the base, I used rustoleum hammered metal finish spray paint in black. I just applied paste wax to the top for a more natural finish.
