About Project

Build a wood platform bed out of boards in no time with this simple step by step diy plan. Wood platform bed features wood slats and a solid wood frame with wood legs. Inspired by Pottery Barn Teen Hampton Planked Platform Bed.

Author Notes:

Well, if yesterday's Beams of Light are my fav 2x4 project, Whitney from Shanty2Chic's platform bed for her son's room has got to be one of my favorite 2x6 projects.

Yep, those are 2x6 boards!

Today's plan is for the bed frame.  We'll get to the headboard  ... oooohh ... can't wait!  ... in a few days.

Did you notice this fantastic memo board in the backdrop?

Of course Whitney made it and shares her tutorial for this memo board so we can all make this room on a tiny budget.  Please take a second to stop over and visit Whitney at Shanty2Chic for lots more details and photos on this bed.

Thanks Whitney for sharing your bed today!  Of course, plans follow!

General Instructions

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

Step 1

Hailey Platform Bed

Build the 2x6 frame as shown above.

Step 2

Hailey Platform Bed

Attach cleats to inside for supporting slats. Use 2" screws and glue.

Step 3

Hailey Platform Bed

This middle support is important for full size or larger beds. Attach so top is level with top of cleats.

Step 4

Hailey Platform Bed

Now we can start trim out. Add trim so it's flush on insides and at head of bed.

NOTE: Kreg Jig users make frame first, and then attach complete frame to bed.

Step 5

Hailey Platform Bed

Then add the trim to top and bottom as shown in diagram, with glue and screws.

Step 6

Hailey Platform Bed

You can taper the legs, or even use store bought tulip feet for a fancier foot. Attach to base of bed.

Step 7

Now add the slats. Slat placement and number of slats is dependent of your mattress requirements.

Step 8

If you find your bed needs a little extra support in the center, here's the best way to beef it up.

Finishing Instructions

Preparation Instructions:
Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth. It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.

King?

I notice King is left out as an option. Is that because you wouldn't recommend going that big?

Hi Kristie, for a king, sizes

Hi Kristie, for a king, sizes vary. This bed can be easily modified, just add a second support to divide the slat support weight up, and then more legs on it to support a king mattress.

Platform Bed Feet

I love the look and ease of the directions of this bed. However, I was wondering how difficult it would be to raise the bed more. Much more. I'm one of those people who prefer high beds. Any thoughts on how to switch it up?

I was thinking instead of using tapered 2x4's for the feet, to use straight cut 4x4's in the taller measurement that I'm interested in. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Wonderful project. I just

Wonderful project. I just finished making the bed and applied the stain. should I be applying a poly protective coat after the first stain coat? I applied the stain with a natural bristle, is it recommended or cloth is better? will be starting the headboard next :)

Thanks for sharing this great project.
