Barrister bookcase - Kent bookcase at PB

I have always loved the look and practicality of antique barrister bookcases! Unfortunately, they are waaay out of my price range, but not necessarily out of building range.
Basically they are made up of long boxes stacked ontop of each other, with horizontal lifting, glass paneled doors.
As someone with space restrictions when building, I thought this would be perfect - no dealing with 8ft long planks, but building a full height bookcase! The longest planks would be the width of the bookcase, maybe 3 - 4ft.
The doors are a problem. Traditionally they should lift up and out, then slide into the case, above the books. Any plans I have seen for these cases create slots for this using a table saw, which I do not have access to. Would there be an easier way to accomplish the same effect? I think just using a hinge that will hold the door up when open would be just as good.
So, what do you think?

The Kent bookcase from PB is a perfect example!
