Do you build first or treat first?

Hello, I'm still in the planning stages in my head of my project. I want to make2 Night stands, and a fabric headboard for my bedroom. Would I stain the wood first or build the night stands first? This is my first project, if it goes well, I want to work on making a kitchen cabinet type thing to help me for my over the range microwave as it's on my kitchen table at the moment. If anyone can give me some suggestions. That would be great.

I'd recommend building first and then staining. That way if you need to trim a board here and there, mess up a cut, etc... you can fix it easily.

If you had all your boards precut and you knew everything was going to fit together perfectly then it might be ok to sand, stain, and finish them before assembly.

Also, having everything built will allow you to apply an even finish over the entire area at one time.

Good luck!
