Lip on a tiled table, or no?

Ok. I've made two end tables (Perfect End Tables), and they have the first coat of stain on them. They are going to be topped with 5x5 mosaic tiles, designed by local elementary school kids, for an auction. The tiles are actually drawings, filled in with flat glass marbles, on cement hardie board.

I bought a few furring strips to make a lip around the table top, but now I'm wondering if I even want it. What would you do? It seems like I could grout to the edge of the table top, and it would look fine...

What I'm worried about is having the "lip" be way higher than the artwork, and it will look like a tray on legs. ?

Thanks!

Hi,

My window sills are tiled and I've put oak lipping on them - it's not too difficult, especially if you use a brad nailer. It's very, very difficult to get a good edge finish just using grout because grout doesn't really have any strength. Alternatively could you use metal or ceramic tile edging instead?

The top edge of the lipping wont be flush with *all* the tiles unless your tiling is amazingly accurate (mine isn't) but as long as it's not too far off it'll look fine. I'd err on the side of getting the lipping slightly lower than the tiles (2mm or 1/16" ish).

Hope that helps.
