Gaps in Table Top

Submitted by ivyh on Tue, 02/10/2015 - 22:28

I'm planning on making a farmhouse table soon and am worried about the gaps in the top. I have kids in the house and they would quickly fill with crumbs and gunk. What would be the best way to fill those in so the table would be flat and easy to clean?

Some kind of caulk? Wood filler? Poly?

Before or after stain?

Thanks for your help, I'm a total beginner and struggle with finishes!

Also had the same issues when I built it. I used a pocket hole system to pull the boards as close as possible and then sanded everything smooth. I then used wood filler to fill the gaps, let it dry and then sanded it again. Use wood filler that will accept stain and stain it. I applied varathane diamond varnish afterwards 3x with lightly sanding with steel wool in between coats. I have a family of 9 and have had no problems with food getting into the gaps.
