This adorable boat sandpit features a fabric sail that acts as a sunshade. It is just right in size for a couple of small children, and "seats" are built right into the hull.

I was inspired by this sailboat sandbox for these plans, but wanted to come up with an extremely easy to build version.

1 – 2x4 @ 8 feet long
1 – 2x4 @ 12 feet long
3 yards exterior fabric, 45” width
Exterior rope
Elmer’s Wood Max Glue
2-1/2” self tapping deck screws (about 50)

Cut List

2 – 2x12 @ 8 feet long – sides
2 – 2x6 @ 49” long – deck
4 – 2x6 @ 45” long – hull
2 – 2x4 @ 45” long – hull
2 – 2x4 @ 72” long – mast, cut from 12’ long 2x4
1 –1-1/4” wood dowel @48” long

Instructions

Step 1

Cut the ends of the 2x12 at 45 degree angles using the speed square to mark out the angle. You can also use a sliding compound miter saw if you have one.

Step 2

Position hull sides on a flat level surface. Apply exterior appropriate wood glue. Screw the deck boards to the edges of the hull boards with 2-1/2" deck screws.

Step 3

Flip the project over. Apply glue to areas to be joined. Screw the 2x4 and 2x5s that are 45" long to the angled ends of the 2x12 boards with 2-1/2" screws.

Step 4

Screw the 2x4 masts to the inside of the 2x12s, centered on the 2x12s, with glue and at least four screws per side. Use the 2-1/2" screws.

Step 5

Drill holes in top of mast for the dowel. Thread dowels through the holes. We left our dowel a little long.

Step 6

Cut the fabric into a piece 45” wide by 3 yards long. Fold sides and ends over of outdoor fabric, and sew to hem edges of sail. Fold corners in and stitch to allow a channel for rope to thread through. Screw I-Bolts into corners of deck boards. Tie rope between I-bolts and sail, pulling sail over dowel and tightening down.
