Floating shelf

Hi, ana's floating shelf turned out amazing. All my cuts turned out good, everything fits well. The problem is tryingto paint it. Used smooth mdf board, and cannot for the life of me get the paint on  (semi glosswhite) without it looking awful. Brush stokes everywhere, sanded down - roller orange peel effect. What should I do?  Thanks.

Hi,

You need to use at least two coats of MDF primer/undercoat before your top coat.  Ligthly sand the primer between coats using 220 grit paper.

MDF can be a pain to paint.  Get yourself some Kilz Premium Primer Sealer. Resand the shelf.  Slap on about 2 coats of the kilz.  Sand the primer down a bit with a 120 grit sanding pad between coats so when you paint it you will have a nice smooth finish.  The roll on your paint.  Oh and another thing.  Use a good quality paint.  If the shelf sees a lot of use and you want to stick with a water based paint.  Trying going with an alkyd paint.
