Joining Butcher block

Hi, This is kitui4u. I would like to use two pieces of left over butcher block for the basement. One is 25" and the other is 5". I want to use these two pieces to make one butcher block top to for a standalone 30" cab. It is in the basement so a seam is ok. What is the best way to put them together? Because one piece is narrow, I thought that I can clamp them together and drill 6" on the side of the short piece, installed a rod (to connect the two) adding glue and clamp again to set. God/bad idea? I also have a pocket Kreg Jig, would it be better? Thanks
