So, I'm finally messing about with my kreg jig. I bought it a week or two ago and hadn't had a chance to take it for a test run yet :) I've been wanting/meaning to buy a countersink bit as well, but I just tested it and the kreg bit seems to work fine for this (without using the pocket hole blue doohickey thing)....so, make the counter-sink hole with that, pre-drill the rest of the way with a normal bit, and it would work fine, right? What am I missing or is this one of those 'duh, Leah!' things everyone but me knew about?? ;)

Hmm, the Kreg Jig drill bit is pretty gigantic compared to a regular sized counter-sink bit. It might be overkill to use the Kreg drill bit for that, but it could be done I guess? You will have a bigger hole to fill with wood filler though. The beauty of making the pocket holes is so that you don't have to wood fill unless you want to hide the pocket hole at the end. And you can hide the pocket holes on the bottom or sides of pieces.
I watched the entire Kreg Jig DVD before I did anything..it's really short and explains how it works very well. I would have said that I would never use a countersink again after using my Kreg, but I screwed up big time last night (long story). But, it turned out the only way to fix my mistake was to use a regular countersink bit. Since I'm painting this piece and not staining it, it was no big deal. But… I definitely learned my lesson about making sure to drill all pocket holes on the pieces before assembling ANYthing.

I was mainly thinking for the 10$ ledges I'd use it. I'm not confident enough with the kreg to think 'hey! I'll just use this!' and it says to countersink from the back, so I wouldn't even need to fill the holes!
