Bypass Closet Doors

I really wanted some clean, modern closet doors that weren't builder grade in our master bedroom. With just a few 1x6s and some glass I came up with these plans! Please visit my blog's site for detailed project plans:

Dimensions
Both doors combined are 72"x59 1/2", A single door is 72"x31". My plans also explain how to measure for your own doors!
General Instructions

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

Finishing Instructions
Preparation Instructions
Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth.

It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.

I have been looking online for ways to dress up our existing 80's style closet doors. These are perfect! Thanks for the plan!

Love the doors you made for your closet. I have been searching for bypass doors for weeks and no luck. Can you tell me where is the link for the plans for the doors.

I would like to use this design as a door for a small bathroom but want to attach it with hardware so it can slide like a barn door... Kind of industrial design like... Do you where I could get hardware like that and make the modifications necessary to this design?

Did anyone have a problem with the thickness of the 1x6 used? My current doors are 1-1/4" thick. The dimensions for a 1x6 is actually 3/4" x 5-1/2". The door will only be 3/4" thick.

I am planning my bypass door now and I like the thinner dimension -- an actual 3/4 inch -- door because it is less bulky. The manufacturer that I ordered my hardware from sells some track hardware and hangers that specifically fits a narrow (3/4 inch) door.

From reading other closet door websites, I could see that Johnson Hardware is considered a decent brand. On the Johnson Hardware site, you can examine the residential grade sliding bypass door hardware (mouthful) and see 3/4 inch choices.

You may want to see if you can determine the manufacturer of your current track hardware. It might be that what you have will work for the future doors you have planned. Good luck.
