Finishing a dining table top

Hi all! I need some help to convince my husband to build us a new dining table. Here's my dilema: He is hesitant to build one because he worries that the top won't be sealed well enough to withstand spilled milk, etc. My thought is, c'mon, people have been building dining tables forever and so there HAS to be a way to completely seal them and still be foodsafe. Anybody have any finishing methods/tips? Thanks so much!

I'd suggest a layer or two of shellac, followed by a layer or two of polyurethane. That will seal it quite well. Additionally, if it's done as a panel glue up, you can make a solid top, which provides fewer opportunities for junk to get in places and make a mess. His first project shouldn't be a panel glue up though.
