Beginner questions

I feel like I am missing some basic instructions (or brain function) and am having trouble with my very first project. I have been trying to put together the planters with finials and between clamping failures and wood splitting I have destroyed more wood than I care to admit to!

So....I am wondering if anyone can suggest some *super beginner* resources?

Like diagrams with where to clamp what when doing a particular joint. (I'm having trouble with clamping my boards of different thicknesses) I guess I should be able to figure this out or visualize it but I just don't seem to be able to!

Tonight I am going to do some video/YouTube searches, I've already watched the Kreg Jig dvd, and hope that something comes up. I have done some searches and not found anything as rudimentary as I think I need.

Or books? Beginner books that you could suggest?
Thanks folks.

There are a few websites with a lot of videos for the begginer 'handyman', carpenter, etc.

Then, if you have more specific questions, feel free to ask them, as too broad questions may be hard to answer.

Hello! I have a broken spun Bamboo table, some one sat on it and subsequently went through it. Is there a section on here that I can post pics of a project and try to get some ideas? I'm really struggling with figuring out what to do with it, I don't want to throw it out, and would really, greatly appreciate any opinions people might have.

Thanks so much!

Here is a link to what the table looks like (this is a placemat, but it will give you an idea), looking down, this is where someone sat, and went through...from the side it is kind of like a bowl.
