Need help deciding on type of wood!

My husband and I are going to tackle the Rustic X Console. It is going to be used as a media center under a wall mounted TV. Our room is quite large, so we are going to modify the plans a little and go to a length of 8 feet. We have shopped at Menards, Lowes and Home Depot and seem to be finding a lot of Pine. Menards appeared to have the best selection and had select, quality and standard boards and a small selection of cedar. The select pine looked really nice, but we were not sure if it was worth the price.

As far as finish is concerned, I am still deciding between painting it white or whitewashing to go with the true worn, rustic look. My question is if pine is our best bet for this project and whether or not we should pay extra for the select boards.

We are in Indiana, so I am not sure if there is a better choice out there for us! We are open to any thoughts or suggestions!

MoonMama,
Most of the people building this project use 2x4's and enjoy the rustic look, however if you want a more refined look select pine or hemfir, although this wood will typically cost more. Hope this helps you and happy building would love to see finished project!
