Hey lovely people!!!

How was your weekend?

We have been so busy busy on the Momplex - it's coming along GREAT!!! and I'll be sharing with you more posts this week - and have quite a bit of family in town - so I am terribly sorry if I haven't been able to keep up with comments and Facebook posts and emails lately. You are lovely for understanding!

My daughter is going to school is two weeks! What I am going to do with 8 hours without a child at home requiring attention and assistance, or worse, creating lots of work for me in the form of a mess when not being attended to ... I have not a clue. I cannot even imagine. You've been with me. You know these plans are written in between loads of laundry, moose burger browning on the stove, a kid climbing on the back of my chair ... you know.

On the first day of school, I can absolutely guarantee I will be spending all day laying in the sun doing absolutely nothing.

That is if I am not waiting in the lobby at the school all day, peeking in the classroom window.

But hopefully on day two - and the days that follow - I'll have alot more free time to dedicate to creating more plans for you! Thank you for your patience with me all these years, it is much appreciated!

My friend Whitney of Shanty2Chic [3] - who has no less than 5 kids - has been needing a larger play table to fit her family at.

We thought it would be cute to double the length of the Trestle Play Table [4], and I absolutely love how it turned out!

6 – 2x4 @ 22” (both ends cut at 15 degrees off square, long point to short point, ends ARE parallel)
4 – 1x2 @ 11 ¼” (cut to width of 1x12 shelf)

General Instructions

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

Step 1

If you can get your legs all built square, you will be good to go! First mark out the 1x2s @ 18" long 5 3/8" from each end. Layout the two ends, and attach top 1x2 to two end legs and repeat for second side. Then measure up from the base of the legs 8 3/4" on each leg and mark a line across both legs. Place the 1x2 @ 11 1/4" on this line and attach with 2" countersunk screws and glue as shown in diagram. Remember, you will need to make two ends that are identical.

NOTE that this plan assumes your 1x12s are 11 1/4" wide. If your 1x12s differ in width, adjust the bottom shelf cleats to the length of your 1x12s.

Step 2

The middle leg follows the same process, only we will do the cleats on both sides for bottom shelf, and the top boards are a little shorter. Build middle same as ends, noting the changes.

Step 3

I'd highly recommend attach with PH screws as well as on top of the 1x2s - there should be room to get your drill in there on the underside, even with the 1x2 cleat in the way. Also attach from top with 2" screws and glue or nails.

TIP: Drill 3/4" PHs along sides of the shelves for attaching trim in next step.

Step 4

Now trim out the bottom shelves. Keep the 1x3 flush to the bottom of the 1x2. This will create a tiny lip on the shelf to keep things from falling off the shelf.

Again, if you have a PH jig, I highly recommend attaching the 1x3 to the legs with 3/4" PHs and 1 1/4" PH screws and glue.

Step 5

Now we tie in the top with the 2x2s. Just attach to ends, and then center supports.

Step 6

And finally add the top!

Finishing Instructions

Preparation Instructions:

Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth. It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.
