Hutch for the Open Shelf Dresser
A hutch is a simple easy to build project that can transform a blank wall into a storage masterpiece. Hutches keep handy all your favorite belongings, anything from dishes to photos to even shoes or entertaiment essentials. This hutch fits over the Dresser with Open Bottom Shelf.

3 – 1×2 boards, 8′ Long
General Instructions. Work on a clean level surface. Take a square after each step. Measure and mark out your boards before fastening. Use the 2″ nails and glue unless otherwise directed. Fasten from multiple directions to reinforce joints whenever possible.
- 2 – 1×12 @ 47 1/4″ (Sides) (cut from the 8′ board)
- 2 – 1×12 @ 59″ (Shelves) (cut from the 10′ board)
- 1 – 1×12 @ 60 1/2″ (Top) (cut from the 6′ board)
- 1 – 1×6 @ 59″ (Bottom Support)
- 1 – 1/4″ Plywood @ 48″ x 60 1/2″ (Back)
- 1 – 1×4 @ 60 1/2″ (Header)
- 2 – 1×2 @ 44 1/2″ (Side Trim)
- 4 – 1×2 @ 12 1/4″ (Top Side Trim)
- 1 – 1×2 @ 62″ (Top, Bottom Trim)
- 1 – 1×2 @ 63 1/2″ (Top, Top Trim)
Build the box. Fasten the sides to the shelves with the 2″ nails and glue. Then fasten the top to the sides. Use the dimensions above to guide you.
Bottom Support. Fasten through the sides into the bottom support, as shown above, using the 2″ nails and glue.
Back. Fasten the back in place, using the 2″ nails and glue. You must fasten the back to the shelves – the shelves are going to need the extra support. When fastening to the bottom support, use the 3/4″ nails and glue.
Header. Fasten the header in place as shown above.
Side Trim. Keeping outside edges flush, fasten the side trim to the sides. You may also wish to trim out the front faces of your shelves. You can do this by measuring and cutting 1×2 boards and fastening to the edges of the shelves, keeping top edges flush. This is not shown in the cut list or materials list.
Bottom Top Side Trim. As directed above, use 2 of the boards H to begin building your crown. Use 1 1/4″ nails and glue.
Front Bottom of the Crown. Fasten board I, as shown above. Use 1 1/4″ nails and glue.
Top Sides of the Crown. Fasten the remaining boards H above the boards H from step 6. Make sure you use the 2″nails and glue, and fasten through the face into the end edges of the top.
Front, Top fo Crown. As directed in step 8, add the final crown piece.
