How to cut straight even lines for beginners

I'm just starting out and don't have a lot of money for tools. Since I don't have the money for a table saw I have a jigsaw. How can I cut the boards evenly? One of the projects I really want to make is this here shelf. http://ana-white.com/2010/07/well-i-did-promise-you-i-would-work-on.html

Any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated!

With a little practice you can cut straight lines with a fence. A fence made of straight boards (check with a square) and a couple of clamps works fine. Check Youtube for ideas also. If you have pieces of the same size and can cut them at the same time all the better. Clean up your cuts with sanding.
