My daughter cleaned her room so instead of renting a dumpster I hauled it to the dump i mean"land fill". Anyway instead of coming back the normal route they detoured us around the dump and I found the mother load of pallets. You could ask and they will be free if your "land fill" is like mine...

I worked at a candy factory that received several pallets all day long and I loved the ones that had writing on them, like Ghirardelli (a chocolate company), Blommer (chocolate manufacturer) and a few others! I've picked up a few and have made picture frames and shelving from some.

I took some pallets from the pumpkin patch last week, with the dream of making something similar!! I want mine a little taller so I am going to attempt a shelf or something, I have had my casters for weeks and was psyched to find the free pallets! Great Job!

Love your site and the fact that you share so much info for Diy's. Where is the best place to get the caster wheels? Vintage are sooo expensive so I got to believe that they are out there new with the idea in mind to antique them..
Thanks for all that you posted and shared..

The two best sources I've found for cart wheels are Menards and Harbor Freight. I think you can order them from Rockler or Lee Valley too, but I know that the two physical stores have a good selection and the prices are reasonable.

I love it! I've been searching for one to buy but might try to make my own now I've seen yours....and definitely more satisfying when you've build something yourself from scratch. Fab job.

Put Away Those Plans!

Submitted by Johnnie8 on Mon, 08/24/2015 - 04:11

Hi Ana,

Just wanted to take a minute to show off a few of my finished projects. I started doing this about a year ago when I found your site and downloaded the $55 fancy x desk plans. Well I've since put those plans away and am making my own! I use all new lumber from the big box stores and have discovered a few techniques to achieve the finishes on these. Thanks for looking and I'm about to post some more!

Simple Outdoor Furniture

This was a fun, easy and inexpensive project. Ana's instructions are very easy to follow. I modified her plan, only slightly, by adding 1X6 to the arms of the chairs, as well, I added a 1X2 cap to the top back of the chair. I also built four (4) accent tables (not stained yet) and a bench. Now I have a great set of outdoor furniture for my deck!

Estimated Cost
Four (4) chairs, four (4) tables, bench, wood screws and stain - approximately $100.00
Estimated Time Investment
Weekend Project (10-20 Hours)
Finish Used
I used an exterior latex stain, in white, on the chairs and bench. I'll be painting the accent tables in an ice blue color to match my cushions.

Inspired by Cabin Bunk System -Full size loft bed

First of all, thank you for the inspiration and foundation for my daughters bed! I knew I had to be a bit creative from the start because the plans were for a twin size and I was building a full. I used your plans for a place to start and ended up putting my own twist in where I could. This is an interactive build complete with the bed, a dry erase board, plenty of cork board, TONS of storage, and a "secret" compartment behind the dry erase board. Oh, and the fully functional desk that my second grade daughter uses to the full extent. Thank you for what you do Ana, without your inspirations this couldn't have happened!

Built from Plan(s)
Estimated Cost
300

Week Long Project (20 Hours or More)
Finish Used
Painted, I would recommend an enamel based paint to allow a nice finish that can be cleaned off. Be warned though, pine will take many coats for a nice look.

Guitar Display Case

Hi fellow builders!

It's Jen from The House of Wood! Today I’m sharing this beautiful Guitar Display Case. I've been wanting a place to display my guitar, and this definitely fits the bill, with a glass (acrylic, actually) panel door, motion-sensored battery-powered LED lighting, and gorgeous rosewood guitar hanger. And I designed it so that you can build it out of half a sheet of plywood! Get the build plans for my Guitar Display Case at JenWoodhouse.com.

Beginner Bench

Submitted by angiemicn on Sat, 07/02/2011 - 04:29

First Anna project, I needed a bench by the pool, so I did waterproof it, which is holding up well, and it's extremely nice even with my limited skills. Definately worth the time and sanding.
Things I learned, need to measure each cut out. I didn't, so my slats are not all the same length. Still works really good, but I should've measure, cut, measure, cut, because I didn't take into account the width of the blade. I wouldn't use so much wood filler. I really glopped it on there. The sanding and staining pre, good call.
I would've used 2 pieces of wood for each leg.
Well, next one. I've already learned so much from making it and had a great time making it. Can't wait to get started on the table to match!

Estimated Cost
65.00 (big chunk of that was the waterproof deck sealant/stain)
Estimated Time Investment
Weekend Project (10-20 Hours)
Finish Used
Behr Premium Weatherproofing/waterproofing Deck, Paint, Furniture Wood Finisher, Natural 500, 2 coats, 220 sand in between, use the minimal amt of wood filler, because it really shows through....This is nontoxic, and since I have 5 Golden Retrievers, 2 puppies that chew, I couldn't use treated wood

Kitchen Island Trestle Table

This was something my wife needed for the kitchen. I told her to find one that she liked and I would build it. This took about 6 hrs because I was building from a picture and no measurements. I dropped the shelf a little lower so my wife could store her mixer and stuff on it. Needless to say I think it came out pretty nice. We are still going to paint it and put one more coat of stain on the top.

Replacing Our Outdoor Furniture

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 04/25/2022 - 15:42

When our outdoor furniture started falling apart, we decided it was too expensive to replace until we found your plans for the “Modern Outdoor Chair from 2x4s and 2x6s.”
The design was almost exactly right.
The only change we made was to make the arms taller so the cushions from our original set would work. Instead of 2x6s for the sides we changed one of the boards to 2x8 and adjusted the arm height by a couple of inches. We made the chair first.
We then used the plans for the Loveseat and completed our set.
After painting the first chair after assembly, we decided it was easier to cut the wood and paint the parts prior to assembly and touch it up after.
The design adjustment matched perfectly. We also created a coffee table using the same type of assembly.
We know these loveseat and chairs will last!!!
Thanks so much
