Missed a Momplex Post?

We are DIYing our moms a Duplex in Alaska! Check out our progress so far as we owner build a home, step by step. Read the Momplex blog here.

Thank you all for the wonderful inspiring comments keeping us encouraged up at the Momplex! My sweet husband, he works all day up there, and then comes home and reads your comments, and every once in a while, I catch him grinning to himself. You are making a huge difference to us!

This isn't the first time we've built a home, but I tell you what, this is the first time we've built this BIG, the first time we've built entirely with ICF ARXX blocks, and this is the first time we've built putting quality and energy efficiency first and foremost. Wouldn't do it for our selves ... but for our Moms? Of course we are going the extra mile!

But behind the positiveness, I can tell you, it has been hard to tackle such a huge project. There are days when it's not said, but we definitely think, Let's just call a contractor ... and get it over with ... There have been days ...

But we just keep going.

Grandpa Tim keeps showing up to help us out, the Ram keeps putting his tool belt on, and one screw at a time, we are DIYing this Momplex. And I want to thank you for helping us stay on track and keeping us inspired. Without you reading, supplying us with tips and ideas, offering encouragement, I know we'd not be where we are today.

And today, we are finally at the last stage of the exterior of the Momplex. Today, we start SIDING!!!!!!!

Okay, before I get too excited, we still have to put decks on, bring in utilities, landscape, pour sidewalks ... but some of this stuff can wait until spring, and essentially, after the siding is done, we can move inside and start working on making this Momplex Mom's home!

Trimming Doors for Siding

We technically started siding with the faux rock work that covers the bottom few feet of the Momplex.

Trimming Doors for Siding

But now the real work begins.

We've chosen to use a metal siding that is installed like vinyl siding, but is fire resistant and has a 40 year warranty for paint. It's the first time we have used this product, so this is a slow process as we learn each step.

First things first, metal drip flashing needs to go up on top of the simulated stone siding, pushing water away from the building as it drains downward.

Trimming Doors for Siding

We start by snapping a chalk line across the front of the Momplex.

Trimming Doors for Siding

And then check the drip edge for fit on the string line, marking the length.

Trimming Doors for Siding

And then use tin snips to cut the flashing to the marked length.

Trimming Doors for Siding

Perfect fit!

Trimming Doors for Siding

Silicone is added to make sure water doesn't somehow seep behind the flashing and behind the siding. If water gets behind your siding and pools up and freezes, it's going to expand and cause you lots of problems.

Trimming Doors for Siding

We then screw the drip edge to the Momplex. We keep the screws high on the drip edge.

Trimming Doors for Siding

So when we add the siding starter strips later on, the screws are hidden.

Trimming Doors for Siding

Now we want the door ways to stand out with a little white trim. So we've purchased some composite exterior trim in white, and just cut it to fit.

Trimming Doors for Siding

The composite trim goes over the drip edge.

Trimming Doors for Siding

We trim out the sides of the garages with this stuff.

Trimming Doors for Siding

We just predrill holes into it, just like a wood board.

Trimming Doors for Siding

And then use special screws that have white painted heads for attaching.

Trimming Doors for Siding

Next we add a longer piece above the garage doors. I love this composite trim stuff because Mom will never have to paint it or worry about it warping or rotting out later on.

And it's easy to install ... just get's screwed on!

To make the front entry doors stand out a little more, we add the composite moulding around them too.

Now we get to a dilemma on the tops of the doors.

If we go ahead and put the 1x4 composite board on top, we will also have to add C Channel (it's a trim for the siding ends) to the top of the 1x4, and then again on the underside of the wood entry framing ... this would leave just an inch or so of siding showing in between.

I had an idea ....

What if we took a wider piece of that composite trim stuff ...

And added it above the door, filling in the entire space ....

So I have somewhere to put house numbers?

Not only does it look great, but we've saved a TON of time. And because this is the Momplex, where you do everything twice, we saved a TON of time times two!!!

DIY, it is not always easy or glamorous or fun ... but if you aren't the one doing it yourself, you can't make these sorts of decisions on the fly. Thanks so much for keeping us going! Can't wait to put that siding up!

So Exciting!

Hi Ana,

So I'll admit that I have been reading/visiting your site for about a year now without commenting on how awesome you and your projects are (bad me!)

But I am so excited you are getting to the siding! I love the momplex, the idea of buiding your own house is just so awesome and I'm loving all the details you share!

So while the start of this posts thanks your reader, I just want to say thanks to you guys for sharing such an amazing project and having the guts to attempt it!

I second Tiffany's comments :) I just realized that it has been just over a year since I found Ana's website... I have a want-to-do list about a million times longer than the have-done list. Ana just keeps inspiring me to want to do more and more! I am always so impressed at just how much you guys accomplish in any given day :)

Believe me. We are reading.

Believe me. We are reading. But don't always comment. Shout Out to Grandpa Tim. Don't you just love Grandpa's.

Oh, Ana & RAM!!!

I got goosebumps when I read that you're starting the SIDING!!! It's so exciting!!! You guys are doing an amazing job!!!!

Ok, I need to slow down with the exclamation points (but I really am that excited!).

I've been wondering this for a while.. Is Grandpa Tim one of your or RAMs grandpas? Or is he Grace's grandpa (like, is he going to be living in the Momplex)? He's helping out so much, which I think is beyond amazing, but I can't really "place" him... ?

Keep up the good work, ALL OF YOU!! :o)

I've been wondering the same thing! Because, if he's one of Grace's grandpas I'm extra impressed.

I'm continually impressed that you're doing this for your Mom's.

We grew up wtih our Dad building our house around us and I can appreciate that you've done this once and are doing it again x2.

Also, had to crack up with the photos, of course someone has a black thumb nail! Comes with the experience, love it :)

Anna, what is your income if the Ram works on the Momplex every day?

So exciting that you are

So exciting that you are getting to siding!

I love love what you did above the doors. I have had a similar dilemma above all of the new windows that my DH just put in my house. I think that is the perfect solution for me, thanks!

I so enjoy seeing your Momplex progress!

I get so excited seeing your updates! Applauding TheRam, GrandpaTim & of course you!! The bigger piece of trim above the front doors gives it great character - looks fabulous.

I love that the Ram will stop for you to take a pic of the screw. : )

Almost There!

It's so exciting watching it through this whole process! (I've been lurking silently since early on too). It's gonna look amazing with siding, I can't wait to see it!

Exciting!

I saw the RAM's poor purple thumb and felt so bad! Nothing hurts like a smashed finger, glad I wasn't there for that...

And yes, just who is Grandpa Tim? I've wondered where he fits into the equation as well. Funny it's not only me. Reading the momplex saga keeps me on the edge of my seat! From the process, to the materials, to the "characters." haha. We have to keep reading before his backstory is finally revealed!

I am such a dork.

It's so exciting to see your

It's so exciting to see your progress on the Momplex and see how close you guys are getting - I know it's still a long way from being finished, but it's come such a long long way so far!

I also wanted to say thank you in general - thanks to you I've built a few projects so far (photo ledges, a side table, and a "farmhouse" bed I modified to make more modern and less farmhouse) and now I'm working on tweeking your designs to make my perfect changing table (that will double as a bookshelf by just unscrewing the changing pad once our kid is out of dipers) and a console table. My projects still aren't exactly cheap, but they're so much less expensive than normal alternatives, and this way I can make things how I want! Thank you for not only your plans, but helping to inspire us to create! (I've always been creative and handy, but never thought I'd be building furniture!)

Appreciation!

Thank you for the wonderful, inspiring comments! I caught him smiling just a tiny bit tonight reading your comments :) Jenny, Cnj, I cannot believe you noticed the thumb - it's tough drilling through metal!

We are hoping to get her fully sided - wow, you are going to love it! - TODAY!!!

Just to answer a few questions, my husband's parents are divorced. Grandpa Tim is just that awesome. The Ram has been working up there full time this summer trying to get all exterior work done by snowfall - and we are looking good for that!

Thank you so much for the kind comments and encouragement! Just can't wait to get inside and turn the Momplex into mom's home!

love the siding so you can get going on the inside

I absolutely love reading about the momplex. i live in a mobile home is Florida and curretnly have one hand recoving from surgery. i will be recovering from the other hand surgery just in time (I hope) to be setting the cabinets I made from your plans, last spring. I am learning so much and hope that I can do half as good as you both do. I need to pay close attention to making them level and attach the countertop. I have them just sitting in place now. with polywood for countertops. the sink is sitting in the plywood and I will be so glad to get them attached and finished.

Been reading for the duration of the momplex build, and decided to come out of hiding to say, THIS IS AMAZING :) It's just way cool to watch you guys do your thing and build a house. Keep it up, you are an inspiration! :)

Cheers from afar

Hello,

I've been reading and following you for quite some time now. I'm so impressed with what you do, both on the Momplex and the website and all the furniture and other stuff! And you live in such a beautiful place, far away from where I am, in Sweden. Amazing how one can travel using the web. :)

I'll keep watching. Best of luck with everything!

Way to go, Grandpa Tim!!

Okay, well, I was also wondering where he fit in as well. How awesome he is to keep helping you with this house. Way to go!!! I saw that purple thumb and thought-that one really hurt. Poor guy.
I don't always comment BUT I am LOVING this DIY project. Like I said earlier, 'these posts are like a book I can't put down and can't seem to find patience for the updates'. I love this momplex!!! You are doing such a great job. You are very inspiring. Every time I read a post from you I think, 'lets do another project'. Right now, I am working on my own farmhouse bed. I am beyond thrilled!!!! Thank you for the confidence I have found to walk into a lumber yard FULL of guys and be confident enough to know what I'm doing. THANK YOU!!!!! Please do not stop-I am loving this!!!

Oh, and great idea above the door. The house numbers will be very visible. What an awesome idea. :)

Amazing

Wow, Ana. You guys are doing a terrific job! I know it must be difficult during summer hours up here to continue working as hard core as you guys do. Good job and it is so amazing to watch the steps as they occur. Thanks for documenting this challenging project and letting us know the tips and steps along the way. We appreciate it.

Cost Update

Can we get an update of the cost to build as it currently stands. I have been researching ICF construction and after reading about the Momplex it seems much more affordable than I had originally thought. Also, besides the ARXX Blocks that you used on the Momplex, what other systems of ICF did you research and why did you ultimately decide to go with ARXX?
