Shelf Reliance Rotation Shelf

I know there are a lot of Mormons that follow you. It is suggested that we save up food for emergencies and many of us have #10 cans we need to store and sometimes rotating them out can be a hassle. Almost everyone is in love with Shelf Reliance rotating system shelving.

They are extremely expensive. My husband and I were thinking about building one and I thought you might be able to come up with a plan for one. Hopefully for less than $100

Thanks so much!

OW! That's expensive!

You can make them of heavy cardboard. For better durability, paint the rack after you assemble it with any non-latex paint or varnish. Like the varnish on a model plane, it stiffens and strengthens the whole unit.

It's not 100% clear in the photos, but the rear slot between the top shelf (cans in) and the bottom shelf (cans out) has to be about 1/2 inch to an inch wider than the can.

The slope can vary, but it has to be "enough" so the cans will roll by their own weight.

For heavy cans (and the #10s with liquid are pretty heavy) you could use free wood pallets instead of cardboard.

Thanks. We were looking at the food storage made easy one last night, but I'm sure that's not going to work with #10 cans. I'm sure that's a good starting point to creating one.

I really like the second one though. I wonder if my husband could modify it for #10 cans. ??? That is definitley on my to do list for smaller cans!

Thanks!

#10 cans are slightly over 6" diameter and 7" tall.

But I was thinking too, that maybe it would be easier to build a normal shelf and then build individual rotating compartments like the ones for the canned vegetables in the link above. Probably would be easier. And that way I can move them around as my needs change.

Thanks Jodi

Love your site by the way.

Let me just say, I am so jealous of people with basements! You guys suck! j/k We can't have basements in Louisiana b/c they'll flood. And basements sure come in handy when storing food storage.

That link made me remember about water! We have no clue where we'd put that much water. We're a family of five in just over a 1,000 sf house. We don't even have space for what we have much less a year of food and water! My parents have a few barrels though and I'm sure they would be interested in this plan.

This plan looks like you'd have to load the cans from the back. I need something that would load from the front b/c of the space I have to put it in.

Later this evening I found out that someone in our ward built a front loading one. So we'll have to find out from him how he did it. My husband said that he might have a plan for a sturdy, light weight one. What ever we decide to do I'll make sure y'all get the plans!
