IKEA's BJURSTA Extendable Table

IKEA's BJURSTA Extendable table Dimensions: Length: 50 3/4 "/ Min. length: 35 3/8 "/ Max. length: 66 1/8 "/ Width: 35 3/8 "/ Height: 29 1/8 "
With only a 7 ft. by 8 ft. dining space I really need a dining table with a small footprint, but I still need to seat 6 on occasion! The IKEA's BJURSTA Extendable table fits the bill perfectly. The build looks fairly simple however I'm not sure if the table top is level when pulled out or if it has to be put in place with some sort of riser. The price IKEA is asking for the table isn't bad, $149.00. However the item would have to be shipped as I don't drive and the shipping cost is $359.00!!!
I'd be forever grateful for plans to build this table!

Hi, I was looking into these the other day and I hope someone finds plans. I did find out that it's called a Dutch pull-out table, or an Amish stowleaf table, or a refectory table. Fine Woodworking has plans, but you have to be a member. You can do a trial membership though. http://www.finewoodworking.com/woodworking-plans/article/designing-for-dining.aspx. The author also has a book (series?) called Tage Frid Teaches Woodworking and it looks like Book 3, page 57, has a discussion of them. It's on Google Books so you can read it there.

The simple design is nice, but the dimensions just don't seem right to be useful.

The extensions are 15", but the average chair is 18" or 19" wide. With the legs so close to the corners, there isn't enough room when extended for a proper seating position outside the leg. If you just try to have 2 chairs on either side, that leg would be in a very uncomfortable position (right between the knees).

Something in that design needs to change--either longer extensions, or a pedestal leg system, or something like that.

And a note about FineWoodworking.com, they have great stuff, but it's aimed at "fine woodworkers" with serious tools, not DIY'ers.

This shows how the slides are cut ... it's going to require some experimentation to get the slant correct and the slots cut with a different size table
