This tiny cabin gets a kitchen makeover! We've shared all the sources and plans used in this post.
This summer, on our free weekends, we've been working on a boat-in only project in remote Alaska. It's a tiny house sized cabin, on a lake about two hours from our home.
At just under 400 square feet on the main level, this project is quite a challenge - especially if multiple families are using the cabin at the same time. That means 10-12 people need to be able to sit on the main level, eat comfortably, and there has to be enough beds for everyone.
The kitchen area was the main overhaul. Here's what it looked like before we started any work.
These are stock cabinets, costing about $1000 to purchase off the shelf.
I dreaded having to remove the cabinets, because they were in good enough shape. But ultimately I knew the property and the cabin - especially this size cabin - the space was too valueable to have the wrong kitchen setup.
For about the same price as the stock cabinets, we were able to DIY this:
Not only is the kitchen aesthetically better, but the function and flow enable us to keep it all clean and organized. This kitchen can keep up with a dozen people on a long weekend.
Cabin Kitchen Sources
Looking to update a space, or find that perfect paint color? Here's the sources we used to pull off this transformation:
Kitchen Cabinet Plans
We built our own cabinets and doors for this kitchen. The main reason was I wanted custom sizes to fit around the windows, and we wanted an open shelf on the end for a cooler. Here is the template we used for the Base Cabinets, and the template we used for the Wall Cabinets.
Kitchen Island Plans
We also DIYed the kitchen island. It is fantastic - the cook is on the end, so not colliding with sink users, and the stove is out of the way, so you can play board games on the island top. Here is the plans for this kitchen island.
Knobs/Pulls
The knobs/pulls on the cabinets are Lombard in Soft Black, available at D Lawless hardware.
Kitchen Cabinet and Island Paint Color
We are so glad we painted the cabinets gray. The wood on wood on wood look was overwhelming. Now the beautiful log walls stand out. The color is Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams.
Countertop on Base Cabinets
The countertop on the base cabinets is a laminate available off the shelf at Lowes.
Thanks so much for checking out our cabin kitchen remodel. This was such a fun project. Let us know if you have any questions - and stay tuned for more projects from this cabin! As soon as I figure out how to sleep 12 in it.
