Square Farmhouse Style Dining Table

Submitted by xcwgrlupx on Sun, 09/12/2010 - 12:22

I'm dying to build something like a Farmhouse dining table, but a square shape would really fit my space the best.  It would need to seat 8 people.  Does a plan exist for this type of table?  If not, I'd love to see plans for one!

I wouldn't think it would be too hard to mod the plans yourself!

Actually, reading through the comments section on that plan, Ana replied to a plea for a square -

Michale, I know this has been done many times before. If you want a table that is square, about 4 feet x 4 feet on top, do 9 2x6s @ 38 1/2″ long for the centers and 2 2x6s @ 49 1/2″ for the breadboard ends. You will need to adjust the supports to match the table top. Also make sure that your 2x6s are exactly 5 1/2″ wide. Good luck with your table!

And to piggy-back on TNSLB's post, if you wanted something to fit eight people (assuming two per side) you will likely want to increase it even further.  That is, unless you have really slim chairs to pull up to the table (and slim friends to use it!).

Thanks for the suggestions! I will probably be taking Dynamic Duo's advice and increasing the size in order to fit 8 people. Pottery Barn has a square dining table intended to seat 8 and it is 5 feet square. Guess I'll have to do some math and see if I can figure this out.

Just posted the modern style, will also make a point to work on the farmhouse style. To seat eight, I would recommend at least 4'x4', 5' is even better. I wouldn't go much more, as the center has little support. I highly recommend building the tabletop first like done in the modern square plan, then adding aprons and legs. And the pocket hole system is amazing for creating a smooth tabletop. Good luck and thanks to so many for lending a hand! Ana
