Nursery Room Book Shelves / Gallery Ledges

I built the Gallery Ledges to add fun and practicality to my nursery room design.  I love the way they turned out!!  Our first baby will be here the end of May, and I can't wait to sit down and read to her here!  If you'd like to see more, go here : http://mekhart.blogspot.com/20.....elves.htmlGallery Ledges

So pretty, congratulations on the new addition to your family!!!  ;)

How strong are those shelves?  I was thinking of building them, but I would probably put a million heavy-duty books on them, so I'm thinking brackets will be necessary...

Thanks so much!!

The shelves themselves are VERY strong and pretty heavy.  I pre-drilled and screwed in the back to the bottom.  For my 5ft long book shelves, I screwed in 5 screws.  I just eyeballed it...one about an inch from either end, and then three sort of centered in the middle.  The front is held on with both wood glue and 2'' nails (I used wood filler to fill these in before painting), so the shelf all in all isn't going anywhere.

I did find the studs in the wall and sunk in screws to them so that if I have a little monkey, she doesn't pull these off the wall.  I actually caulked and repainted over top of my screws just because I didn't want to wish I would've later if the books don't exactly cover up my screw holes.  Since she'll hopefully be reading lots and lots of books, I didn't want to walk in and see screw holes all of the time!

Hope that helps!
