I fell in love with the closet storage for the bifold doors. I don't have bifold closet doors, but figured it can also be used for regular doors. We got lucky and got a fresh batch of boards at Lowes the day we went, so our boards were very straight.
Here it is pre-paint and before we hung it on the door:
Here is the finished product:

It looks very nice! It's great that you adapted a plan to fit your space.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It was a very easy project to practice on and since it was going inside the closet, if I messed up, it wouldn't be too noticeable. (And I did mess up on the paint job, but thankfully the photo hides those flaws!)

plans?
Do you happen to have measurments for your project? Just trying to convince my better half to start on this, and it usually goes better when the "thinking" is mostly done. Thanks! Becca

Door shelf
Are the doors hollow? How or what did you use to attach shelves? I love your idea -- saw something on pinterest with the shelf on outside of door and purchased -- very expensive -- like your idea so much better!

Sliding doors?
Do you think the shelves would work on a wooden sliding door? I have 2 sliding doors to my closet, and obviously I could only put shelves on the outside sliding door, but I'm not sure if it would work. Any thoughts? Though I may do the shelf on my other closet single door. Love the idea?

GREAT IDEA!!!
DO you have the specs for this? I want to make one like tomorrow but I need to know what type of wood, the sizes and everything because I'm afraid it'll be too heavy PLUS the friend that would build it for me would want specific instructions! Any help would be much appreciated! I have a TINY closet and need shoe space ;-)

Hi, I'm the original poster,
Hi, I'm the original poster, but I can't get into my account, so I'm posting from another account.
To all of you asking about the specs, I built it according to this plan, except I added an extra bar across each shelf to hold items in better (you'll see the original plan has one bar across each shelf, mine has two): http://ana-white.com/2010/08/behind-closet-doors.html
My closet door is hollow and I attached it with two wood screws at the top and bottom (you can see the two black screws at the top if you look closely). I also used L-brackets at the bottom to support the entire thing and screwed the L-brackets straight into the door.
