Preparation

Shopping List

2 - 1x12 @ 8 feet long

1 - 1x4 @ 8 feet long

1 - 1x2 @ 10 feet long

32" x 48" wainscotting panel for the back, or 1/4" plywood

Fastener of choice - can use 1-1/4" pocket holes, brad nails, or trim screws, or any combination

Also need 3/4" brad nails or staples for attaching the back

Cut List

1 - 1x12 @ 48" - top

1 - 1x12 @ 45-1/2" - shelf

2 - 1x12 @ 32-3/4" - sides

2 - 1x12 @ 12" - dividers

2 - 1x4 @ 45-1/2" - supports

Back is 47" x 33-1/2" - can be shorter since the 1x4 is at the bottom of the back

2 - 1x2 @ 32-3/4"

1 - 1x2 @ 48"

Instructions

Step 1

Attach top to sides with 1/2" overhang on ends.  Use your choice of fastener.

Step 2

Use the dividers to help place the shelf as shown.  Attach shelf to sides.

Step 3

Position dividers in final locations and attach.

Step 4

Add 1x4 supports.  Make sure you fasten to the bottom shelf as well for the most strength.

Step 5

Attach back panel with 3/4" brad nails and wood glue.  

Step 6

Trim front with 1x2s to finish out the front edges and add an overhang to the top.  You can build first with pocket holes and then attach, or attach with brad nails.  2" brad nails would be needed to attach the top front to the 1x12 edge.

This is great. But I noticed almost all the plans on this website (including this one) have < 13" width's. What if we want bigger shelves? Would it make sense to get bigger boards given this design? Or should I approach it from a different design?

I am planning to build the Brookstone hutch. The instructions were not specific, but it appears that (3)1X4's were used for the casing. I'm assuming 1X12's would work as well? Preference?

I too would like the complete build and material list for this hutch but the PDF file is not working. All that is there is lot's of symbols and characters.

I noticed in the supply list there are no 1x12's but the directions and cut list mention 1x12's.  I wanted to check my calculations that I will need two 1x12's at 8'.  Thanks for the help.
