General Instructions

For long term durability and more professional results, I recommend using a pocket hole joinery system for wood joints.  Here is a video with tips for using a pocket hole jig:

Instructions

Step 1

Headboard Construction:

Drill 3/4" pocket holes along one edge of six of the seven 1x8 boards, spacing pocket holes about 10" apart.

Attach together with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws, so front edge is flush.

Step 2

Headboard Back Frame

Cut the top 1x3 to match the length of the 1x8s.  Drill 3/4" pocket hole and attach to the top as shown with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws, with the pocket holes on the inside.

Then cut the vertical 1x3s to fit and attach with 3/4" pocket holes and 1-1/4" pocket hole screws.

This completes the headboard construction - sand and finish as desired.

Step 3

Siderails

Build the two siderails in mirror, with the long 2x4 flush to the bottom of the 2x6 siderail.

Then attach the 2x6 legs at the ends of the 2x4s, making sure it is square to the siderail.

Use 2-1/2" star bit screws.

This completes construction of the siderails - sand and finish as desired.

Mark the location on the headboard where the siderails will join with the headboard and trace out.  Drill pilot holes through the headboard, so on assembly, the holes are predrilled through.

Step 4

Footboards

Drill two 1-1/2" pocket holes on one end of each of the 2x4s that are 6" long.

Attach inset 1-1/2" from the outsides to the footboard, flush to the bottom, with 2-1/2" pocket hole screws.

This completes construction of the footboard, paint and stain as desired.

On assembly, attach the footboard to the sidreails with 2-1/2" star bit screws.

Step 5

Build the center support with 2-1/2" star bit screws.

On assembly, screw to footboard and headboard with 2-1/2" screws.

Step 6

Lay wood slats on top of the siderails and attach the screws with the shorter screws.
