Cabinet risers/organizers - how thick should the MDF be?

I am planning to make some extremely simple "risers" for my cabinets to make use of the dead space. Basically they will be 2 sides and a top held together with screws (thanks to my new Kreg jig). However, I need to know how thick the wood/MDF should be, and how long I can make the top without it sagging. I only plan to put light things like plastic bowls on top, but I might like to put glasses up there too. Any advice?

Lauren, 1/2" stock is probably best for this. If you go too think (3/4" stock) it will look disproprtionate and be too bulky. Check out the sagulator online for a shelf weight limit. Good luck with your project, would love to see your photos too!
