I'm an artist living with an artist and we are in major need of a flat file with drawers large enough to hold full sheets of artist's paper up to 36" × 48". This one I found online looks cool, http://www.factory20.com/stora…..s/ . Flat files usually run in the $1000's price range — so, needless to say I would tripple love to see plans for something like this. Has anybody here built a flat file before?

This should get you started. You will have to enlarge the top, drawers, and bottom to fit the larger paper. Drawer glides are essential on drawers that size.
OR ... Make a extra-huge cubby with shelves and doors. Disadvantage is that you can lose things way back in the slots.
Also, check craigslist for "blueprint" files, architects files, and flat files. You might get lucky.

This is one approach to making the drawer glides. If you can make accurate drawers and a cabinet, it should work pretty well.

He's right about the expense of hardwood though, especially when purchased from the home center. This is where you really want to find a woodworker friend who has some scrap you can use. Hardwood gets significantly cheaper by the foot when you buy a larger quantity, but it's still spendy. And there's the small issue of transportation, storage, and the fact that even at a better price a lot of wood costs a lot of money. You could drop a couple thousand dollars on a stack of wood that doesn't look that huge.
