Tile on top of projects? Any thoughts, ideas or general help?

Hi there!

I know that we are all mainly wood working builders here but after seeing Ana's photos of her bathroom vanity with the lovely seaside ocean blue tile I am compelled to ask for help from Ana and the community!

Has anyone worked with tile on their projects? I would love to finish the tops of some of the projects with tile but I have no idea how to do it. Tile can be expensive and I'm not sure I can afford to play around too much.

If anyone has any advice or knows how to tile a vanity, countertop or backsplash - I would greatly appreciate your insight!!

It seems that most tile comes pre-cut and the thought of cutting it at this point is a little beyond what I would want to do.

Thanks for reading and responding!

I love working with tile. Cutting it isn't terribly hard with a water saw, which you can pick up for under $100 at most home improvement stores.  You pick up tile nippers at the same time to trim your cuts. The beauty of a tile saw is that they're much safer to use than a table saw, but wear eye protection and old clothes because they throw mud.

To put the tile down, you need some kind of underlayment which doesn't shift with water or heat. There are multiple varieties available in the same places they sell tile. You'll also need some kind of adhesive. I recommend using an acrylic tile adhesive, which is easy to use and seems to be pretty stable. You'll also need a notched trowel.

Like said already, size the project around the tile, ot can be had in many different sizes.  As for where to get tile, visit your local used building supply store, I was just in our local ReStore and saw tons of small packs of tile, great for projects like this where you are not covering huge areas.
