Okay - total novice here. My husband and I have just built the farmhouse table (our first build) and I'm trying to get this type of finish:

LOVE the tones in this, and maybe it's just the camera image. But I cannot seem to figure out how to replicate it. I've tried Minwax dark walnut, but it's too yellow. Is the problem that we're working with mahogany wood?
Can anyone help? We're stuck!

Mahogany?
If you're using mahogany, I'd pass on using a stain completely. A penetrating oil finish would bring out the natural color of the wood, which I assure you is beautiful. A topcoat of polyurethane would protect it.

Thank you, Clay. I'm
Thank you, Clay. I'm actually not a fan of the reddish tint to mahogany. We're only using it because we live on a tropical island in the South Pacific where termites are a problem. Thus, they stock a LOT of this wood here. I'd rather stain it the color I linked to above because it matches the rest of the house better.
Anyone have any ideas?

Test boards
The best bet is to grab several likely candidates in the smallest containers, and stain small patches of some of your scrap. I can usually get by with three samples.
I also try to cover it with examples of my topcoat(s), because that can change color and my perception of color.
