This is beautiful! It looks however like it may be made of a lighter material with wood veneer. So, for this piece it would be sufficient to use 2x2's. If you made a solid top from say pine, I might use metal pipe encase with wood. It would be plenty strong and it would still have the wood appearance. You could also change the design if you weren't sold on this one and almost do a pedestal like design with all your support in the middle. Just make sure the top is strong and use lots of glue and either pocket holes/screws, or biscuits. I hope this helps some!
