Shelves we can all love!

If I wasn't so ADHD I could probably figure these out but alas, I am.

THese area really cool style.  They are so simple that I think they might

appeal to a bunch of people.  in addition to the interlocking pieces you could do

side and top finish off peices.  You could not use them for a more modern

look or finish them off for a more traditional look.  Does that make sense?

It's really hard to cut the slots precisely enough to make sturdy furniture unless you have precision routing equipment.

 

And this design is a lot like the slotted particle board cheapies that never stand up straight. It would need a backing to stabilize it, and then it's just a 'cubby" bookcase.

yea- i can see your point. i guess i was thinking it would look good covering a whole wall.

Then I could have that "whole wall of books" look.  I have always loved how that looked.

Like a mini library!

Wall of bookcases

That's 4x8 sheets of plywood on the back, and 1x8 uprights and shelves.The first one is 4x8 and the others are 4x8 with a chunk added to fill the wall up to the vaulted ceiling. The big one is 13 feet (with the rare books up there, and an occasional cat).  Shelves are fixed height (paperback or hardcover), with a strip down the middle for CDs. A couple of screws through the back stabilize them.

Lemme see if I can draw up the plans, because with pocketholes this would be seriously EASY to do.

I would use the Willy bookcase plans to create that look!

cece ... yes.  That's the Science fiction and Fantasy section  Cool   Non-fiction is elsewhere.

 

I'm drawing up plans and have diagrams, not so great as Ana's, but followable. Will be posted soon, and maybe she'll take pity on me and clean them up with Sketchup.

 

Had we known about TWO things before the project was started, the build would have been so much easier:

  1. General finishes Gel Stain and wipe-on polyurethane finish ... it's marvelously controllable and easy to use.
  2. Pocket screws and Kreg jigs would have been much faster than drilling the shelves and uprights like we did. ... many hours faster. (I got the Kreg for my birthday ... he really likes me, and he's hoping I build shelves for the bathroom real soon)

You have to be very picky about board selection: we went through a lot of boards to find really straight ones. When it's a 1x8x12 even a little warp is a huge flaw.

Fantastic!  I need to do this under my kitchen sink and was having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to get a solid piece of plywood in there.  You've just inspired me. Thanks!
