If there is a train set under your tree, there's a good chance that next week you'll be looking for something else to store that train set under.

Might I suggest under the bed?

I do believe even a preschooler could put the train set away with this train trundle play table.  I know kids, and one thing they will readily do is stuff things under beds.

Using PureBond Maple plywood, maple 1x4s, caster wheels and boiled linseed oil, we quickly created this starter building project.  So pretty! We can also feel good about using PureBond Formaldehyde Free plywood and solid maple for the wood, and finishing the project with the same finish used on food cutting boards.

I know this was a super simple project, but we loved it so much!  The wood was just beautiful, and the project so durable.

This trundle train table is sized to fit this train set, but you can easily modify the dimensions for any train set.  Or better yet, you can modify it to fit any of your storage needs!

TIP: For larger or trundles with heavy loads, consider adding a fifth caster wheel in the center.

General Instructions

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

Instructions

Step 1

Make a box out of your 1x4 boards, join at corners with 1-1/4" brad nails and glue.

Step 2

Now we’ll just attach the plywood to the bottom with 1-1/4" brad nails and glue.

Step 3

Finally attach the caster wheels.

Finishing Instructions
Preparation Instructions
Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth.

It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.

Brilliant! I got rid of my kids' wooden train set because of the storage issue.

And, yes, girls love wooden trains just as much as boys.

Great project, but to improve it and hide the layered plywood edges, cut the sides so that they go on the outside edge of the plywood instead of the top edge. Secured with glue and pocket screws, it should be able to handle any weight put on it.

Can't take my eyes off the gorgeous bed! Did I miss the plans for that?? :)

And love the train set. Can't wait until we build the garage so I get a more permanent workshop to build gifts easily! :)

LOVE THIS! I am going to change it up a little- add a row of little storage boxes- then use this for the boys legos- I might even install some of those lego flat green boards on the inside.
