I made a small bar top with some oak stair treads and a few marble tiles. I had a plywood base, then attached the treads with the round edge out, leaving a rectangle for the tiles in the middle. Then I added a 1x2 under the lip, where the riser would be. I found an old photo where you can see it in the background.
The oak at Home Depot would give the top a Butcher Block color. I would have to rip a third piece to get my width right but I think I am going to spend the money and try it.
