Removing minwax?

Submitted by aj0805 on Sat, 09/25/2010 - 05:49

We have a bedroom set that my DH recieved from his parents.  His Dad had finished it with an ugly green shade of min- wax on the drawer fronts and a natural stain colour on the rest of the cupboard.  What would be the easiest way to remove it or paint over it?  We haven't tried anything because my husband seems to think there is nothing we can do.  It really needs to be updated though if we want to use it for our kids room.

My DH is usually very handy and has made all our living room furniture (end tables and coffee table and a book cupboard type of thing, as well as our bedroom furniture) so I hope that whatever we need to do can be done.

Thanks so much in advance :)

Painted drawers and wood frames are trendy right now.

Here's what I would do:

  1. Remove the drawers and take off the pulls.
  2. (optional) Clean the insides of the drawers thoroughly, and wipe on a coat or two of clear gel urethane (keeps the kid stuff from sticking).
  3. Scrub the drawer fronts with fine steel wool and mineral spirits to remove any left-over furniture wax. This will also scuff up the finish a bit.
  4. Prime them.
  5. Paint them something that goes with the rest of the room, such as a color from the bed linens or curtains.

And while the drawers are out, clean up the rest of the piece with a soft cloth and mineral spirits and maybe wipe on a coat or two of clear gel urethane for protection.

Then come back and POST PICS of the before and after.
